Spotlight on Healthcare: What is genomics?
Complex genetic health conditions are becoming increasingly difficult for those who are affected, as not many people, if at all, understand where these genetic health conditions stem from.Dr Edda Koina, leads Canberra Clinical Genomics (CCG), and has effectively sought answers for families through research and innovation within the science of genomics.
What is genomics?
“Genomics is the study of the total or part of the genetic or epigenetic sequence information of organisms and attempts to understand the structure and function of these sequences and of downstream biological products.” – World Health Organisation, 2020.
Through a partnership between Canberra Health Services (CHS) and The Australian National University (ANU) in 2017, research into genomics was launched for discovery of rare diseases as a routine diagnostic service for clinicians.
This service was publicly funded and from its humble beginnings, has now expanded into a large genome diagnostics research area that includes research in familial cancer, congenital disorders, paediatrics, cardiology, renal and more.
ANU has the knowledge and infrastructure for this type of research and the hospital in which the research is conducted, has the capacity to provide enough funding to any clinician to support the genomic clinical trials.
With ongoing support in funding, CCG will gain access to new technologies that will provide a more in-depth trial of some new genomic disorders, as well as obtain enough information on genomics because of the strength of this publicly funded research and development project.
With the right team and the right support, genomic research as well as other plans for research and development in clinical trials, can enlighten the future of the health industry and the welfare of individuals not only in Australia, but across the globe.
Our health experts here at MBG are passionate about all things growth and innovation, especially when we have worked closely with many organisations in implementing their research and development plans, clinical trials, as well as worked closely in harnessing government funding for compelling R&D projects across Australia.
